Plato’s Cave By-laws
-passed Fall ’98-
I. Name and Purpose
A. This group shall go by the name Plato’s Cave.
B. The purpose of Plato’s Cave is to bring together a network of students and faculty from VSU to engage in critical discussions about a wide range of relevant philosophical ideas. Such dialogues will take place in a number of ways, but will always reflect the students’ interests and take place in a constructively critical manner.
II. Membership requirements and Dues
A. While Plato’s Cave is a student-run organization, membership will be open to all students and faculty. Additionally, anyone in the area wishing to participate is welcome as long as s/he participates consistently with the purpose of the group and is not detrimental to the well-being of the club.
B. Membership dues shall be $5 per semester. These dues entitle a member to all voting privileges and all functions that require money to participate. However, only students will possess voting privileges.
III. Officers
A. Criteria
1. Officers must be full or part-time students at Valdosta State University and must be active members of Plato’s Cave. The officers must be elected through a ballot process in the spring semester. Officers will hold office for a term of one year, starting at the beginning of the academic year. If an officer is unable to finish his or her term, elections for that position will be immediately held.
B. Offices and Duties
1. President
The President’s duties include serving as official spokesperson of the organization, presiding and conducting business at general meetings of the club, and forming any committees for which s/he sees a need. The President is responsible for organizing the content of all meetings. A President must be of at least junior standing and can only serve for one term.
2. Vice-President
The Vice-President’s duties include assisting the President and filling the role in the event of the President’s absence. The Vice-President must be of at least Sophomore standing.
3. Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for keeping minutes at all meetings. Other duties include keeping an updated active membership list and contacting all members about club functions.
4. Treasurer
The Treasurer must be responsible for the club’s funds. The treasurer also is responsible for maintaining records of all income and expenditures. Finally, s/he must also assist the Secretary in keeping updated active membership lists.
IV. Faculty Advisor
A. The Faculty Advisor position can be held by anyone in the faculty selected to do so, regardless of his or her academic field. Ideally, the Faculty Advisor should be somewhat involved with the club before being selected. The Advisor will be selected from willing Faculty by students in a private forum. An Advisor can serve multiple times but cannot serve three consecutive years.
V. Changes in the By-laws
A. Adjustments in the By-laws can be made at any meeting and require 2/3 voting approval to pass.
