2008/2009 Flu Season is here
The 2008/2009 influenza (flu) season is upon us and health officials are encouraging South Georgians to get their flu shot as the first and most important step in protecting themselves against this serious disease.
Each year approximately 5% to 20% of the United States population gets the flu and 36,000 people die from the flu. “The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family against seasonal flu. There is no shortage this year and South Georgians should take full advantage of the availability,” stated Lynne Feldman, M.D., District Health Director.
Beginning with the 2008/2009 flu season, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
(ACIP) recommends all children ages 5-18 years begin getting a flu shot annually. Children in schools and daycares are a major source for flu contamination. Not only will receiving the flu shot protect a child from becoming sick, it will protect other children from getting the flu from him/her.
Persons over the age of 65, the very young, and people with special health problems should also consider receiving the pneumococcal vaccine. To find out if you should receive the pneumococcal vaccine, contact the health department or your medical care provider.
The flu vaccine is now available at your local health department and will cost $20. Cash, Medicare and Medicaid will be accepted for payment for the flu shot. For more information please call your local health department or South Health District at 229-333-5290. You may also visit them online at www.southhealthdistrict.com.

Financial Aid Opportunity: Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholarship Program
Students (including returning students) interested in earning a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree with a concentration in public child welfare may apply for financial assistance through the Title IV-E grant program. The program is a Federal/State/University partnership that provides a stipend to accepted students equivalent to their full tuition, fees, books, and mileage.
IV-E students complete specialized child welfare curricula, including a dedicated child welfare internship with the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Students who successfully complete the program are hired by DFCS after graduation at full salary, and are required to maintain employment with DFCS equal to the amount of time they received financial assistance under the program. Program admission is competitive, and ideal applicants will have a strong interest in a career in child welfare, have completed (or have nearly completed) 60 lower-division college credits, and must be able to fulfill the mandatory work commitment post-graduation. Current Georgia DFCS employees are strongly encouraged to apply, and may be eligible to receive flextime to complete their college degree.

Community Friends for International Students
Help give each new VSU international student a friend in the Valdosta community…become a resource for the student and help the student in times of homesickness and cultural adjustment. A Community Friend also provides the student an opportunity to share his/her culture. The Friend can be an individual or an entire family. By inviting an international student to dinner, taking her to the mall, or participating in other such social activities, a Community Friend helps an international student feel welcome and helps compensate for the separation from friends and family. This is a unique opportunity to learn about another culture and make a difference in the life of an international student. For more information, contact Irina McClellan, International Student Advisor, 229-333-7410.

The DA’s Office handles sensitive information regarding crimes and victimization; therefore issues of confidentiality are vital. To learn more about volunteering, please call Karen Ambrose, Senior Victim Advocate, (229) 244-7170.
